Arnheim argued that there is too much emphasis put on certain subjects in the education system. Someone who has ‘success’ in Mathematics is classed by society as highly intelligent, whereas someone who has achieved even higher grades – this is a whole other topic – in Art or Design is classified as wasting their time. When was the last time you went for a job where it said, ‘need a minimum of 3 GCSEs, one must be in an art based subject’? Never. It always states we need maths / english / science or similar. As far as I’m aware, Paul McCartney and John Lennon were not very academically successful, and so within this model, they would be classed as dim; but surely we all would rate them each as a genius? They changed the face of music forever, being two of the most influential musicians ever. I’d trade that skill for the ability to solve an equation that a computer could do in micro seconds, in a heartbeat.
